It has a current population of over 82 million, and, since its unification (East and West Germany were divided from 1949 to 1989 by the Berlin Wall) has become one of the richest countries in the world and Europe’s leading economic power. German food, like Dutch, contains potatoes, but also savoury meats and fruit (an important crop as much food is imported). Specialities include Schnitzel, Sauerkraut and Bratwurst, but also Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Gateau).

Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia generally consider themselves free states. The country itself is flat towards the northern and coastal areas, but with the Bavarian Alps and Black Forest in the south.
