Tours
Tours has two main stations: Tours Centre-Ville opposite the Centre International de Congrés Vinci, and Saint Pierre des Corps. It has direct rail links to Paris via the TGV, under an hour’s travel time. Tours, “Le jardin de la France”, is located in central France and is the largest city in the Loire Valley with a population of 136,942 (2006).
Eurostar trains between St Pancras International and Tours have average journey times of 5 hours, 30 minutes, making travel by highspeed rail very popular and convenient. The route passes through Lille, Paris, then changes through Les Aubrais, Orleans and St Pierre des Corps. Tours is popular with tourists that book tickets for winter and spring, as it is less expensive at these times.
It is well-known for its historic significance, preserved heritage and original medieval district. The city is most popular for the Tour de France, a cycling race event where participants cover a total distance of 3,600 kilometres. The Tour de France comprises of 1 prologue and 20 stages and will run from Saturday July 3rd to Sunday July 25th 2010. This year will be its 97th annual event. Tours is filled with locals, the large student population and tourists, making it especially lively at night.
