Lille
Gare Lille Flanders operates trains throughout Lille, and Gare Lille-Europe runs international and high speed services including TGV and Eurostar. These are the two main stations in the city. Trains between St Pancras and Lille run around 20 times a day Monday-Friday, and 25 times a day Saturdays and Sundays.
Eurostar trains between St Pancras International and Lille have average journey times of 1 hour, 30 minutes, making travel by highspeed rail very popular and convenient. Late spring or early summer are good times to book tickets for, as the warm weather is excellent for tourists with a beach inclination.
Lille has about 220000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest city in France. It is near the Belgian border, and was named a European Culture Capital in 2004. Lille is important for rail travel, and has a well-preserved history also making it an important tourist destination. Shopping is a key part of the city's lifestyle, with a mixture of markets and both international and traditional shops. The best time to visit is in summer between June and Augusst, with average temperatures around 68°F, 20°C. Winter temperatures have an average of 32° F (0°C).

La Vieille Bourse This building was constructed around 1652 when Lille was a part of the Netherlands. There are bookstalls inside the cloister, two lions above the entrance gate, in a “fleur de lys” (city emblem). | |
Palais des Beaux-Arts Lille’s Museum of Fine Arts is housed in the 19th century building. It displays pieces by Goya, Donatello, Raphael and Rubens. | |
Hospice Comtesse The former 13th century hospital remained in working order up until 1939 to become a museum showing examples of tapestries, painting and wood sculptures from across the region. | |
The Open Air Museum The living museum is a recreation of a local village, complete with thatched cottages, rural craft workshops, seed barns and traditional farmhouses. | |
