The city is the third most popular area in France, as it is an attractive and undamaged coastal town with a small well-kept beach close to the city centre. La Rochelle is also full of historical importance such as the Wars of Religion, the siege of 1627 by Cardinal Richelieu who killed 28000 people through starvation. The tree-lined promenade in the city centre is full of street entertainers and arts and crafts stalls at the weekends. There are dozens of walkways and buildings made of pale stone all over the city, with plenty of accommodation and competitive prices. Rooms with harbour views tend to be more expensive.
