Avignon
Eurostar trains between St Pancras International and Avignon run most frequently during the summer, the route passes through Lille and Paris, making travel by highspeed rail very popular and convenient. Avignon is popular with tourists booking tickets for June/July because of its Mediterranean weather.Average journey times are between 5 hours 54 minutes and 7 hours 11 minute depending on the time of day, and run between St Pancras around 9 times a day.
Trains between Ebbsfleet and Avignon usually run around 12 times a week, but the train due to arrive at 22:07 also runs on Saturday 19th, 26th December 2009 and 2nd January 2010.
Avignon is the current capital of the Vaucluse department and prestigious cultural capital. It was once the capital of the medieval world, also known as Altera Roma or “City of the Popes”. There is a farmer’s market, good wine trade, with many natural wonders that make excellent sightseeing opportunities. The most famous sites are close to the centre, which still shows evidence of the Popes’ visits.

The Saint-Bénézet Bridge It took 8 years to build the bridge, which is called the “marvel of time” because it has threatened to collapse so frequently. It spans 920 metres, with 22 arches, and is 4 metres wide. Local legend says that a young shepherd was guided by angels to build the bridge over the river Rhône, and that the people of Avignon did not believe his story until he had carried a gigantic stone over the river. |

Nîmes This arena is the best surviving example of a Roman amphitheatre, from the 1st century A.D. Audio-guides are available with tours and additional information in the gladiators’ section on the games. The Maison Carrée is the only completely intact Roman temple in the world and now shows 3D films on a large screen. The Magne Tower gives an excellent view over the city. |
