Bruges is the most visited part of Belgium, and has a population of approximately 120.000. Most of the international tourists are English and American. Bruges dates back to the 9th century, and after the 11th century, became one of the most important centres for commerce in Europe (especially for textiles including linen and cotton). In 2002 it was named European Capital of Culture. The whole city is a pedestrian zone- the lack of congestion helps it keep its charm but mini-buses are permitted for tours (it is recommended that tourists spend a couple of days to take in all the sights) despite it being easily accessible on foot. Frequent train lines run from Ghent and Brussels (only 20 minutes). There are many reputable restaurants in Bruges, but prices can range from around 27€ to 35€. The famous Kardinaalshof restaurant, for example, provides a six course menu for an average 88€ per head. |
